A Fifth of the Way In: The 2025/26 Premier League So Far
As the Premier League season reaches the one-fifth mark, the excitement is palpable. With just a few points separating the top and middle of the table, the 2025/26 campaign is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent memory. Every match seems to be closer than ever, meaning those that enjoy an accumulator bet, are often left flabbergasted by the results.
Tight Margins, Big Shifts
Currently, only 9 points separate 1st and 13th place, making this one of the tightest starts to a Premier League season in years. The mainstay teams of the Premier League, and newly promoted Sunderland are just a few wins from jumping 7 to 8 places. Yes, it’s early on in the season but the teams that will be fighting out for the top 7 European places seems to have grown beyond the “normal” top 6 and one other. While the gap of 14 teams fighting for a few key places is vast, the fight for relegation seems to be just among 5 teams for the 3 places.
This level of competition means:
- Momentum is everything – teams must string together results to stay in the hunt.
- No clear runaway leader – unlike previous seasons, the top clubs are closely matched.
- Mid-table teams remain in contention – even those outside the top seven have realistic hopes of climbing in European glory.
- Relegation-threatened sides are likely to be cut adrift soon – the bottom 5 clubs currently could well be cut adrift, given the gulf in quality between those fighting for loftier ambitions.
The Big Seven: How They’re Faring
Arsenal – 1st (19 pts)
Arteta’s side lead the pack with the best goal difference. Their defensive solidity and attacking efficiency make them serious title contenders. If there was ever a season for Arsenal, this has to be it. They have a strong squad and those usually so consistent above, seem to be faltering. If they can keep getting corners, they could score their way to glory.
Man City – 2nd (16 pts)
City have five wins from eight, but two early defeats have exposed vulnerabilities. Still, their depth and experience make them a constant threat and with Haaland scoring every game, they will be pushing Arsenal all the way and seem the most natural contender’s to break Arsenal hearts.
Liverpool – 4th (15 pts)
Under Arne Slot, Liverpool have shown flashes of brilliance but remain inconsistent. Their recent home defeat to Manchester United and recent poor run highlights the need for greater stability. They have by far the best squad in the league but getting the new starts to settle into the style of play will determine their success this year.
Chelsea – 5th (14 pts)
Chelsea look more composed this season. While not dominant, they’re grinding out results and re-entering the top-four conversation. They are unlikely to be challengers for the title, but should certainly be considered for one of the four or five Champions League places next season. Cole Palmer’s fitness could be key to it all.
Spurs – 6th (14 pts)
Tottenham have bounced back from last season’s struggles. Their attacking flair is returning, and they’re picking up points but with a very shaky home loss to Aston Villa at the weekend, there is still work to be done. They have undoubtedly made huge strides under Thomas Frank already.
Man United – 7th (13 pts)
United’s win at Anfield was a statement, but their negative goal difference suggests defensive issues remain. They have certainly had tough opening fixtures but the big games might not be their downfall, as they create chances against teams who play open football. The challenge might be if they can open up teams who are coming to defend.
Everyone Beating Everyone
This season’s unpredictability is part of its charm. Upsets are frequent, and no fixture feels like a foregone conclusion. The Premier League excitement is real and it’s being fuelled by the fact that any team can beat any other on their day.
Surprise Packages and Relegation Watch
Several teams outside the traditional top tier, including Bournemouth, are outperforming expectations, while others are struggling to find form. The relegation battle is already heating up, with clubs in the bottom third only a couple of wins away from mid-table safety.
It’s hard to see past the two newly promoted teams in Burnley and Leeds, then we may have a shake up with West Ham, Wolves or Nottingham Forest who might make the drop at the end of the season. There is so much to play for!
